Besides bravery and military strategies, the Civil War was about brother killing brother, and General Hancock had the sad duty to kill a great many of his fellow Americans at Gettysburg.
Both sides knew the great battle, and in fact the war, would be decided by Pickett's charge into the center of the Union line. When Gen. Hancock saw 13,000 Confederates marching toward him, he knew his duty was to kill a great many of them. We can only imagine his thoughts as he looked over the sea of his brothers on the open field and realizated how horribly well his cannons would discharge his duty.
