A consummate loser or a courageous soldier with a selfless dedication to duty - no one is sure about General Pickett and his suicide charge into the center of the Union lines at Gettysburg.
Last in his class at West Point, General Pickett nonetheless served his country with bravery, and Ms. Radnoti has captured the portrait of the boy down the street who like countless young men in war, dress gallantly only to be caught in the wrong place at the wrong time.
